Motivational Techniques in Adult Learning: The Importance of Relevancy

In the ARCS model, Keller describes goal orientation, motive matching, and familiarity as strategies to use to convey relevance with adult learners. I selected this article from Faculty Focus because it describes some practical techniques to establish relevancy with adult learners. I can use the information in the article, and apply it when lesson planning to improve my teaching. For instance, as the article suggests, I can devote time at the beginning of a lesson discussing what we are doing in class, why we are doing it, and find ways to connect the lesson to the learners’ goals and experiences.
